Giant wet Plate Camera project Part 2

by JamesNYC30. March 2013 01:08

Our friend James Weber who when not shooting fashion and beauty, has become a serious Wet Plate photographer. And like every American he too wants things bigger. To achieve that James did a great deal of research and came up with the idea of using an "Indoor Grow Room" as a camera.

Creating Daylight with strobe in the studio

by JamesNYC13. December 2012 13:36

This week I was hired for an advertising shoot to: "Create slightly diffused southern daylight" with strobes in a rentals studio here in NYC. for a pharmaceutical campaign.

This was a fun challenge as most of the time people want straight daylight duplicated in the studio; or they hand me a tear sheet and say: "..make it look like this...". More often than not photographers and assistants will bring in HMI lights (4K or larger) onto a set and call it "Good-nuff" when attempting to duplicate a day light type of light source in the studio.

Video location scout for fashion shoot in Brooklyn "Dumbo" area

by JamesNYC30. July 2012 12:30
Several weeks ago I worked on a shoot in Brooklyn "Dumbo" area.  While hair and make up was being done we took a stroll and did a little location scouting of the area. This proved invaluable when the art director ask were the location was that they saw with "BLAH BLAH BLAH" features. I had listed the streets a d locations in the audio track of the video.  Yes it hand held but if you pause the video in most instances you get a very clear view of the locations.

Location over view of Chelsea Hotel roof top

by JamesNYC27. May 2012 08:44

Chelsea Hotel NYC - Location over view of Chelsea Hotel roof top.

The Chelsea Hotels long history of being the playground and home to the artists of the past and those to be determined in the future are now long gone.

The hotel has changed hands yet again and is currently being completely renovated.

The art and images that had previously adorned the hotels enterance are gone.

The footage of the roof top in the coming months will no longer be valid as the development company has plans to strip all of the existing 'Character' of the roof in order to bring in a more corporate presence on 23rd street.

If anyone has any desire to shoot at this location you had better do it soon; before the remaining elements of this historic Hotel are stripped and sold off.

David Harry Stewart - Dodgeball-4-Ever

by JamesNYC28. June 2011 06:38

ASA 800, 1/200 sec, f4, 60mm on a 24-70 zoom

What: Adult Dodgeball,

Where: Various neighborhood rec centers around the east side of LA

Why: I take photos for the fun of it, sometimes I get paid.

How: Flash on camera, combined with a key light coming from the back or side. My assistant is on the far side of the gym going side to side following the camera moves, holding a monopod with a flash head on it. Keep it simple.

Gear: Canon 1DS III, 24-70 zoom, 550EZ flash, Pocket Wizards, Quantum Q Flash w/turbo battery. The Qflash has 1/4 CTO on it.

Soundscape: Loud. Think bar juke box: ACDC, Stones, Bowie

The first round was done journalistically, but after taking a couple of direct hits to the camera from one of the 16 balls that are in play, I learned that some kind of control would be a good idea. The later photos are more setup, although they are still playing for real.

Here is the entire series.

Huge thanks to Erik and the other folks World Dodgeball Society who were great in helping me do this series. For those so inclined, check out playing in one of their leagues. Super nice, super fun, co-ed, you get to wear silly outfits and throw grade school rubber balls at each other, then go out for beers with the whole gang. What’s not to like?
